Petrol and diesel engines do not age the same way, and their schedules reflect it. A diesel makes soot as a matter of course, which is why diesel oil goes black within a few hundred kilometres and why black oil in a diesel is not on its own a problem. What is a problem is a diesel doing only short runs.

Where a particulate filter is fitted, the engine periodically burns off the soot it has collected and needs a sustained drive to do it. Interrupt that often enough and the extra fuel injected for the burn ends up in the sump, thinning the oil. Fuel filters and water separators matter more on a diesel for the same reason, and they are on a schedule rather than on a symptom because you never feel one loading up.
